Season summary 2009/10

With a good finish of third in the league last season and a disappointing exit after penalties in the cup semi final, there was a sense of under achievement in the club from Shannon Town A. So with James Carrig at the end of his first season in charge, he only thought that improvement was a must for season 2009/10 for Shannon Town A. So with the signing of 20 bodies and a superb pre season planned, the management team of James, Darren Keane, Adrian Coneely and Michael Collins had high expectations for an improvement on last season.

Shannon Town started pre season training with a buzz around the players, management, supporters and everyone involved. The missed out promotion spot last season could have crushed lesser teams but management installed a winning mentality in us from our first pre season match. A few good wins in pre season and the winning of the Wesley Webb tournament was a huge boost for confidence as the season opener loomed ever so close. Promotion, to arguably the strongest junior league in Ireland, and an appearance in Jackman Park was top of our agenda for the up coming year. Time for talk was over, time to prove we were good enough.

First league game started on the 20TH August with a home tie to Croom which we won 3-1 with out too much hassle. Games came thick and fast while the light was there in the evening, and a convincing 4-0 win away to Charleville, where nothing ever comes easy, came next. First points dropped came at home to Star Rovers where a share of the spoils was a fair reflection on the game. With Janesboro, Granville and Prospect all falling to defeats the title contenders starting to show, and we could see Summerville, Caherdavin, Star Rovers and ourselves were the teams that were going to push for promotion.

Early exits from Munster Junior and the Lawson Cup let us concentrate more on our main objective which was promotion. As the league came close to the final weeks we could clearly see that Shannon Town, Caherdavin and Star Rovers were the 3 teams contesting the important promotion place. The last 2 weeks of the season saw the 3 teams still to play each other. We met Star and lost out 2-1 to a last min goal but picked ourselves up and beat Caherdavin 3-2 away to by far the best game in the league this season. So final run down came between ourselves and Star Rovers to see who went up as champs. Shannon Town finished top and as champs but it wasn't to be as a clerical error meant Star finished a point clear. Neither the less we were promoted to the elite of Limerick football, The Premier League.

In the midst of all of this we had reached our Divisional league cup final against, many consider our bogey team, Summerville. With a not so good end to the season Summerville had a huge chance to change that into a good finish to a disappointing league campaign. With all set and in place a thrilling game came out of Jackman Park which saw  The Town win by a marginal score line of 2-1. The score line didn't reflect that Shannon dominated the game with an early goal only to be cancelled out by Summerville's first and only attack of the first half. In the second period Shannon dominated and were unlucky not to have latched on 2 or 3 more but 1 was more enough to ensure the cup was going home with them. One cup they were not going to take away from us.

So to sum up we achieved promotion and won the divisional cup, which at the start of the year we would have taken. It was a long, hard tough season with at least 120 training sessions and huge dedication from players and management with sometimes up to 4 training sessions a week. With this huge achievement comes harder work for the up coming season, so with that bring it on.

Huge thanks to all management, players and all supporters for the efforts and help throughout the season, lets hope for the same next. Thanks to Shannon Town committee whose support was outstanding through out the year also.
